Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Extruded polystyrene (XPS) Polyurethane (PUR/PIR) Expanded Polystyrene is a lightweight, rigid and closed-cell plastic foam insulation material produced from solid beads of polystyrene. Expansion is achieved by pentane gas dissolved into the polystyrene base material during production.

Polyisocyanurate is chemically related to polyurethane, a versatile plastic used for car parts, solid tires, pillows, paints, adhesives, sealants and many other uses. Polyiso is derived from isocyanate in a complex series of reactions. The R-value of XPS is R-5 per inch. The R-value of polyisocyanurate is R-5.7 to R-6 per inch (although cold-climate builders sometimes use a lower R-value because polyisocyanurate performs poorly at cold temperatures).

Because it is made of only one material, EPS is also easy to recycle. XPS versus EPS insulation. XPS and EPS have some key differences: Thermal conductivity: both XPS and EPS provide good thermal conductivity performance. However, the air trapped in the voids in the EPS will conduct heat.

When building or renovating a high-performance building envelope there are really three main kinds of rigid foam panels you are going to have to choose from - Polyisocyanurate known as Polyiso (PIR), Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) - often called Styrofoam - and Expanded Polystyrene (EPS).

2013-11-05 · When extracted and tested after 15 years in service, the EPS had 4.8% moisture content by volume, compared to 18.9% for the XPS (a four-fold difference). The testing lab also found that XPS holds water longer than EPS. After 30 days of drying time, the XPS still had elevated moisture of 15.7%, while the EPS had dried to 0.7%. In conclusion: polyisocyanurate gets top marks for being 'eco' if you can handle its moody disposition. EPS foam is versatile and in the middle ground for performance, financial and ecological cost, and XPS foam is a top performer but comes with some unfortunate baggage. XPS performs better than EPS. You only have to look See for yourself the performance advantages of Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) vs.

Xps eps or polyisocyanurate

With increasing requirements in continuous insulation (c.i.), Architects, Designers and Specifiers are faced with making a choice: Polyisocyanurate (polyiso) or Extruded Polystyrene (XPS). Both of these foam plastic insulations are governed by Chapter 26 of the International Building Code (IBC), yet they are very different in their physical and thermal properties.

On an annual basis, the heat flow results show that 2 inches of XPS is 21% more efficient than polyiso (and 1 inch of XPS is 12% more efficient than polyiso). Water Absorption The material standard that defines properties for all XPS and EPS is ASTM C5784.

Although both XPS and EPS are available in compressive strengths of 15, 25, 40, and 60 psi, XPS also comes in 100 psi.
